Cimetidine aids in treatment of existing ulcers and helps to prevent new ulcer formation. It is also used in treatment of gastritis (inflammation of the stomach), esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus) and gastric or esophageal reflux. Cimetidine decreases the amount of stomach acid produced and is the generic equivalent of Tagamet.
